Assignment 1C

Assignment 1C

Q Assignment #1 - Identify original, empirical research, review it, and critique it! Assignment #1 will be spilt up into five small "chunks". In this chunk you only have to identify an article that fits the criteria. You will revisit this same article in Assignment #1 parts B, C, D and E! So, make sure you find the topic of the article interesting. The combination of all of these, A-E is a thorough analysis of an original research article. The parts could be combined to start you off on your way to an annotated bibliography or literature review of your own. Assignment #1C - Original Research Article - Method Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your ability to identify methods used in original social research. Skills: You will work with online databases to identify a peer-reviewed original research article. You will identify the key elements of the research study. You will demonstrate your ability to paraphrase original research. Knowledge: You will begin to gain knowledge about the topic of interest that you would like to study further - perhaps in Capstone (in a real literature review you would continue this many times over until you felt you understood the state of the topic entirely). Task: 1. Use online databases – through the library – to identify a peer-reviewed, original, empirical research article on the topic of your interest (Assignment #1A). 2. Once you have identified the article fits the criteria (peer-reviewed, original research, and is actually readable), save a pdf of the article (Assignment #1A). 3. Identify the method used in the original research article BY the researchers/writers of the article. Be careful not to identify a method the researchers are merely discussing or reviewing in their literature! It must be the method of the original research! 4. Write a short synopsis (50 to 100 words) of the method used in the original research. This should be in complete sentences and should address all of the items noted below 5. Upload BOTH your synopsis and the pdf of the article. 1. 1. 1. What method did the author use in this study (e.g. surveys, secondary data analysis, experimentation, observation, content analysis, qualitative interviews, some other method)? 2. How were their main concepts in the study defined and measured? 3. Is the method the researchers chose stronger on validity or reliability? Why? How could the researchers improve the validity or reliability of this study? Criteria: You must address all items noted above in a coherent and well-written essay. A complete rubric is found below. Be sure to upload BOTH your synopsis and your original article. Below are some helpful guideposts as you write the critique. Do not follow these prompts at the expense of following the outline above. The outline above is more comprehensive; however you should check that your critique does the following: • Demonstrates an understanding of the overall purpose of study; what it is generally studying and why the researcher decided to study • Explains the specific method(s) used in the research (and written about in the article), Explains also the sampling procedures. All relevant concepts are used and discussed correctly (i.e., methodology, sampling, IV, DV, measurement & conceptualization). White et al. conducted a study titled "Implicate or exonerate? The impact of police body-worn cameras on the adjudication of drug and alcohol cases" in 2021. It was a qualitative study in which document analysis research methodology was used. The cases of misdemeanors filed in 2014-17 in Tempe were accessed and analyzed. From 2015-2016, body-worn cameras (BCWs) were deployed in Tempe Police Department (TPD). The police officers were divided into two groups based on receiving body-worn cameras. In November 2015, some police officers received BCWs, while others received them in May 2016 (White et al., 2021). These cases were thoroughly analyzed and compared, considering the allocation of BCWs to two different groups.
